Calm Guidance offers autism-affirming counselling in Burlington and virtually across Ontario for autistic and neurodivergent children, teens, and adults.

Support can focus on anxiety, sensory overwhelm, masking, autistic burnout, emotions, relationships, school or work demands, identity, and self-advocacy. When support can help

Every neurodivergent person is different.

Some people come to counselling because anxiety, burnout, low mood, or social demands are becoming harder to manage. Others want help with relationships, self-advocacy, life transitions, parenting, or understanding their needs more clearly.

There is no single “right” reason to reach out. We start with what matters to you and your family.

  • Anxiety, overwhelm, or autistic burnout
  • Friendships, communication, and relationships
  • School pressure, routines, or transitions
  • Emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Identity, confidence, and self-advocacy
  • Parent support and family communication
Care for every age & stage

Autism-affirming support for children, teens, and adults

Support changes with age, environment, relationships, and what the person wants help with. We begin by understanding the individual—not by fitting them into a preset program.

01

Children & parents

Support may focus on big feelings, sensory overwhelm, routines, transitions, school stress, communication, and helping family members understand what the child needs.

02

Teens

Teens may want support with masking, exhaustion after school, anxiety, friendships, identity, self-advocacy, or feeling misunderstood. They can participate at their own pace.

03

Adults

Autistic and questioning adults may seek support for masking, sensory or social demands, work, relationships, autistic burnout, late identification, boundaries, or accommodations.

Support for parents matters too. Parent guidance can help families understand behaviour as communication, reduce conflict, plan for sensory and emotional needs, and find calmer ways forward. Explore Parent Support & Coaching →
What autism-affirming support means here

Care that respects needs, strengths, and autonomy

Autism-affirming counselling starts from the understanding that neurodiversity is a natural part of human difference—not something that needs to be fixed.

01

We listen first

We learn about communication preferences, sensory needs, strengths, interests, and the situations that feel difficult or draining.

02

No pressure to mask

Support is not about teaching someone to hide who they are. It is about building understanding, choice, coping tools, and self-advocacy.

03

Practical support for real life

Sessions can focus on emotions, relationships, burnout, school or work stress, transitions, routines, and family communication.

A clear distinction

Counselling—not a test or normalization program

Counselling is different from an autism assessment.

This page describes counselling and practical support, not a formal autism assessment or diagnostic service. You do not need a diagnosis to reach out. If you are looking for an assessment, mention that during the consultation so we can help clarify what kind of service you need.

Support is not about appearing less autistic.

Goals are not built around forcing eye contact, suppressing harmless autistic traits, or teaching someone to hide who they are. We focus on reducing distress, understanding needs, supporting autonomy, and making everyday environments and relationships more manageable.

What happens at the beginning

A calm first step, shaped around the person

1

Free consultation

Alicia will ask who support is for, what has been difficult, and whether Burlington or virtual appointments feel best.

2

First appointment

This is not a test. The counsellor will learn about goals, communication preferences, sensory needs, and what would make sessions more comfortable.

3

A plan built together

The pace, format, tools, and level of parent involvement can be adjusted as you learn what feels useful.

Common questions

Good to know before you reach out

Do you support autistic children, teens, and adults?

Yes. Calm Guidance offers autism-affirming support for children, teens, adults, parents, and families. The most appropriate clinician or service is confirmed during the consultation.

Do I need a formal autism diagnosis?

No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to reach out. Counselling is based on what the person is experiencing and what they would like support with.

Can counselling help with masking or autistic burnout?

Yes. Support can help someone notice demands and overload, understand sensory and social needs, communicate boundaries, plan recovery time, and build self-advocacy without treating autism as something to remove.

Will counselling try to make my child appear less autistic?

No. Autism-affirming support does not use appearing neurotypical as the goal. We focus on well-being, communication, autonomy, coping, relationships, and practical support for everyday life.

Is autism counselling the same as an autism assessment?

No. This service provides counselling and practical support; it is not a formal diagnostic assessment. If you are seeking an assessment, mention it during the consultation so we can help clarify the type of service you need.

Can parents be involved?

Yes. Parent guidance and family support can be included when helpful, particularly for children and teens. The level of involvement depends on age, goals, privacy, and what feels supportive.

Can sessions be adjusted for sensory or communication needs?

Yes. Tell us about communication preferences, sensory needs, pacing, breaks, or other accommodations that may make sessions more comfortable.

Are virtual appointments and receipts available?

Yes. In-person counselling is available in Burlington, virtual counselling is available across Ontario, and receipts are provided. Coverage varies by plan and clinician designation, so confirm details with your insurer.
