Practical strategies from Calm Guidance Counselling & Support in Burlington
Parenting a child with ADHD can be incredibly rewarding—but it can also be exhausting.
One moment your child is creative, curious, and full of energy. The next, they’re overwhelmed by emotions, struggling to follow directions, or frustrated by tasks that seem simple to others.
If you’ve found yourself wondering, “Am I doing enough?” or “Why is everything such a battle?”, you’re far from alone.
At Calm Guidance Counselling & Support, we work with many families navigating ADHD. While every child is unique, there are practical strategies that can make everyday life feel calmer, more predictable, and less stressful for everyone.
Understanding ADHD
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is much more than having lots of energy or difficulty sitting still.
Many children with ADHD experience challenges with executive functioning—the brain’s ability to plan, organize, manage emotions, remember instructions, and regulate attention.
This means your child may:
- Forget what they were asked to do
- Become overwhelmed by routines
- Struggle to transition between activities
- React emotionally before thinking things through
- Lose items frequently
- Have difficulty managing frustration
- Find it challenging to stay focused on tasks that aren’t immediately interesting
These behaviours are not a sign of laziness or poor parenting. They’re often a reflection of how your child’s brain processes information.
Understanding this difference is one of the first steps toward creating a supportive home environment.
1. Focus on Connection Before Correction
When children feel understood, they’re often more willing to cooperate.
Instead of jumping straight into discipline, try connecting first.
You might say:
“I can see you’re having a hard time getting started.”
or
“That looked really frustrating.”
Feeling heard helps lower emotional intensity and opens the door for problem-solving together.
2. Keep Routines Predictable
Children with ADHD often thrive when they know what to expect.
Simple routines can reduce anxiety and decision fatigue.
Consider creating consistent routines for:
- Mornings
- Homework
- Meals
- Bedtime
- Getting ready for school
Visual schedules or checklists can also help children become more independent over time.
3. Break Big Tasks Into Smaller Steps
“Clean your room.”
For many children with ADHD, that instruction feels overwhelming.
Instead, try:
- Put dirty clothes in the hamper.
- Put books on the shelf.
- Make your bed.
- Pick up toys.
Completing one small step at a time builds confidence and reduces frustration.
4. Notice What Goes Well
It’s easy to spend most of the day correcting behaviour.
Try to intentionally notice the positive moments too.
Examples include:
- “I noticed you started your homework without being asked.”
- “Thank you for helping your sister.”
- “You kept trying even though it was difficult.”
Specific praise helps children recognize their own strengths and builds self-confidence.
5. Build in Movement Breaks
Many children with ADHD regulate attention better after moving their bodies.
Movement doesn’t need to be complicated.
Try:
- A walk around the block
- Jumping on a trampoline
- Dancing to a favourite song
- Stretching
- Obstacle courses
- Playing outside
Even five to ten minutes of movement can help reset attention and emotions.
6. Support Emotional Regulation
Big feelings are common for many children with ADHD.
Rather than trying to stop emotions, help your child learn to manage them.
Some strategies include:
- Belly breathing
- Naming emotions
- Drawing feelings
- Taking sensory breaks
- Using calm-down spaces
- Practising mindfulness together
Learning emotional regulation is a skill that develops over time.
7. Give Choices When Possible
Children are often more cooperative when they feel they have some control.
Instead of:
“Go brush your teeth.”
Try:
“Would you like to brush your teeth before or after putting on your pajamas?”
Small choices can reduce power struggles while still maintaining structure.
8. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
ADHD doesn’t disappear overnight.
Success often comes through small improvements.
Celebrate:
- Trying something new
- Recovering after a difficult moment
- Using coping skills
- Asking for help
- Practising perseverance
These small wins build resilience over time.
When Extra Support Can Help
Sometimes families reach a point where home strategies aren’t enough.
If your child is experiencing ongoing challenges with:
- Emotional regulation
- Anxiety
- Friendships
- School stress
- Low self-esteem
- Family conflict
- Executive functioning
working with a counsellor can provide additional tools and support.
Counselling isn’t about “fixing” a child. It’s about helping children understand themselves, build confidence, develop coping skills, and strengthen relationships with the people who care about them.
Parents often benefit too, gaining practical strategies they can use at home every day.
